Review: 2007 Tropical Cyclone Activity

Analysis of integrated global hurricane activity shows that the previous 12-24 months exemplify a continuing decreasing trend since 1997. Since tropical cyclones occur planetwide throughout the calendar, moving averages of cyclone energy are used to show the global nature of earth's cyclone energy.

Global Accumulated Cyclone Energy for each calendar month from 1977 to March 2008.

The ACE for the Southern Hemisphere during Feb 2008 was 75. August and September 2007 had ACE values of 84 and 106, respectively. February 2005 saw a simliar amount of activity, ACE = 76. Current April 2008 activity is 1.6 (including Neoguri through 00:00 UTC April 16).

Global Running Sum

The current 12-month running sum of ACE for the globe is 570 for April 2007 - April 15, 2008. Previously, Mar 2007 - Mar 2008 was 609 and Feb 2007 - Feb 2008 was 630. The mean and standard deviation of this metric (global 12 month running sum ACE) is mean = 844 and sigma = 150 (1977-2007).
