Interlibrary Loan - Document Delivery Policy

Purpose of Interlibrary Loan (ILL) An Interlibrary Loan takes place when one library borrows from another in order to fill patrons' requests for materials not owned by the first library. Books, theses, and other materials are loaned to patrons. In the case of non-circulating items, like periodical articles, the lending library photocopies the resources, and patrons generally do not have to return them.

Who May Use This Service and What Does it cost? Interlibrary Loan services are available to all COAPS Library students, staff, and faculty engaged in academic research. There is no cost to the patrons.

How to Request a Loan Patrons must check the Online Catalog and/or the Periodicals List to ensure that COAPS Library / FSU does not own the item needed. After this step, an Interlibrary Loan Request form can be found on the FSU Libraries' Forms Page. You will need your FSU Card to complete this form. Instructions for making ILL requests are available on the Interlibrary Loan site. The online database will store most of your information, but you will always need your FSU Card to fill out requests. When the material requested is received, patrons will be notified by email or telephone, and the material can then be picked up at the Reserves Desk.

Length of Time it Takes to Get a Loaned Item On average, Interlibrary Loan items are received within three weeks. This is just an average - some requests may take much longer. It depends on the materials requested and where it is being requested from. Dissertations, theses, reports, and foreign language items can take a considerably long time to arrive.

Length of Time One Can Keep the Loaned Item The time you can keep a loaned item varies. It depends on the item you borrowed and the institution that lent it. Included with the book will be a slip over the cover giving the due date. Please keep this slip with the book and return the book to Strozier Library at the time indicated. You may request an extension on the loan period, but please make this request to the Interlibrary Loan Department before the due date. If you would like the COAPS librarian to return the item for you, be sure you give it to her/him BEFORE it is due so that s/he may plan a library run on or before the due date.

Questions Questions or concerns regarding Interlibrary Loan should be directed to the FSU Interlibrary Loan Department. The telephone number is 644-4466.
