The frequency of hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. between 1949-1992 was analyzed and related to the warm phase of El Niño-Southern Oscillation. The bootstrap technique was used to estimate the population characteristics of 11 El Niño and 22 neutral years. The former is defined as that in which the 5-month running average of SST anomalies is greater than 0.5(degree)C for at least 6 consecutive months beginning before September and including October, November, and December. The U.S. is 2.2 times more likely to have 2 or more landfalling hurricanes in a regular year than in an El Niño year.
