NSCAT Monthly Mean Stress Images

With David Weissman, James J. O'Brien, and Jiraporn Whalley Monthly averaged surface stress can be determined through remote sensing.
Surface stresses are derived from observations of the NASA Scatterometer
(NSCAT). A model function develeoped by David Weissman is used to compute
stresses from microwaves scattered off of water waves. These stresses are
then binned in half degree resolution bins and averaged for each nearly full
month of
NSCAT observations (October 1996 through June 1997). Images of these averages are shown below.
