Student Opportunities

Student Computer Programmer

The Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) has an immediate opening for a part-time, undergraduate computer programmer. Duties include (1) maintenance of existing program codes and (2) development of new program codes in support of ongoing data management and scientific research activities at COAPS. The data center at COAPS primarily focuses on real time data acquisition and quality control of meteorological observations from oceanographic research vessels. This position offers a motivated student the opportunity to build their programming skills outside of the classroom. Our research group seeks innovative students that can complete tasks with limited supervision.

Applicants must have a strong interest in computer applications programming and should be pursuing an undergraduate degree in computer science, IT, computer engineering, or a related field. Candidates should have practical experience with a base language (i.e., FORTRAN or C/C++) and must be willing to learn new languages. Familiarity with the UNIX/LINUX operating environment is a plus.

The position will be filled for the Summer semester 2008 (max 30 hrs/wk), with an employment extension based upon performance. The position is part-time OPS with wages commensurate with experience and typically on the high end for student employment.
