The Center for Ocean - Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS)
is running idealized and realistic numerical simulations to study the ocean
response to Hurricane Dennis on July 5-13, 2005. Of particular interest is the
higher than expected storm surge in Apalachee Bay. Experiments are designed
to test the hypothesis that the hurricane generated a barotropic wave traveling
along the shelf in the same direction as the hurricane track, which was amplified
as it traveled along the West Florida coast to Apalachee Bay. This may
contribute to the sea level rise in the Bay.
