These are winds from the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS-1 scatterometer for the TOGA COARE LSA Domain (10S - 10N, 140E -180). The winds provided are the selected ambiguity from the Freilich and Dunbar model function (Freilich and Dunbar, 1993) provided by the NSCAT project and the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC). These winds are considered to be a neutral stability wind field referenced to a 10-m height. The horizontal spacing between wind vectors is 25-km (nominally). The data are separated into four ascii files, one for each month of the IOP (November 92-Feb 93): CMFDDEC.ASC 100593 records CMFDFEB.ASC 116503 records CMFDJAN.ASC 113913 records CMFDNOV.ASC 120477 records TOTAL: 451486 records All records are in the same format: READ (12,*) i,wvctime, month, day, + hour, minute, second, wvclong, wvclat,u,v where: i is the integer ers-1 scan cell (valid range is 1-19; 1 is nearest nadir point, 19 is farthest from nadir) wvctime is the time of the wind observation (integer seconds past 1/1/92) month is integer month of the wind observation day, hour, minute, second are the integer day, hour, minute, second of the obs. wvclong, wvclat are real longitudeE and latitudeN of obs. u,v are easterly/northerly component of ers-1 wind vector from the Freilich and Dunbar model function (provides a wind vector at all locations where data are available, regardless of wind speed). A special value of +999.0 indicates no data available. For east-west component, a positive value indicates a wind blowing from the east to the west. For the north-south component, a positive value indicates a wind from the north to the south. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ References: Freilich, M.H. and R.
