The Norwegian Meteorological Institute's icemodel MI-IM has been developed during the last years for the purpose of climate studies and short range ice forecasts. The model is used together with both the MICOM oceanmodel and a local version of the sigma-coordinate model POM. The talk will focus on coupling of MI-IM to both oceanmodels and the differences between the coupling to the bulk mixed layer of MICOM and the sigma representation of the upper ocean in POM. Also a problem with possible instable inertial oscillations in the coupled system will be addressed. To solve the problem a very tight dynamical coupling between the ocean and the ice might be needed. This can limit the easy maintenance of a single ice code coupled to different ocean and atmosphere models in applications from daily forecasts to climate studies.
