Robert Hallberg, NOAA/GFDL
GFDL is in the process of constructing and refining an IPCC-class coupled model using a global version of HIM at 1-degree, 48 layer resolution. This talk will cover some of the challenges faced when coupling HIM with GFDL's sea-ice model (SIS), and then discuss more generally the progress with these simulations. In this model, the fully nonlinear in-situ equation of state is used everywhere in the governing equations (except the vertical coordinate). The coupled model also has a diurnal forcing cycle. The prospects and challenges of using a bulk mixed layer formulation in a model with both diurnal and seasonal cycles will also be discussed.
