ABSTRACT
Towards the goal of developing a forecasting system for the Indian Ocean, a Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model is set up for the Indian Ocean Region. As the first step the model results are being validated against observed in situ and satellite data. The model gives good comparisons with observed data, especially for the surface currents and the temperatures and salinities of the surface waters. However the model does produce too diffuse thermocline in the northern parts of the domain, thus retaining warm waters in the sub surface regions. Possible reasons for these sub surface warm water simulations are being investigated now. And in order to produce more realistic thermocline and sub surface waters, the sensitivity of the model to the reference pressure choice and to the mixing scheme used are being tested.
