ABSTRACT

Some recent developments of the Nansen Center version of MICOM will be discussed. The representation of the pressure gradient force (PGF) has been reformulated inspired by the recent work of Rainer Bleck. The PGF is formulated as a gradient of the geopotential along a pressure surface instead of the traditional gradient of some function along an isopycnic surface. The mode splitting technique has been modified so that mass can be added in a consistent manner. One of the benefits is that the use of a virtual salt flux in representing fresh water fluxes can be avoided. A two level time-stepping scheme has been implemented and is currently being tested, mainly motivated by the desire to reduce the number of computational modes and increase the efficiency when many tracers are present.
