ABSTRACT
In this study, we describe modeling analyzes aimed at developing an understanding of the observed Mediterranean Overflow Water variability and at elucidating the impact of such variability on the North Atlantic circulation. The results depend strongly on the ability of the ocean model to represent the Mediterranean outflow as shown by an investigation of a 50-year 1/3° North Atlantic HYCOM in which the overflow is parametrized using the Price and Yang (1998) boundary condition. In this simulation, we find that the main variability of the outflow salinity comes from the entrained water and appears to strongly depend on the chosen entrainment depth. The sensitivity of the outflow to this parameter is tested in a series of 1° North Atlantic experiments.
