ABSTRACT

Representation of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) in the high resolution (0.08 degree) global HYCOM has been investigated. The simulations with climatorlogical and interannual forcing reproduced a fairly realistic total volume transport (13~15 Sv) of ITF from Pacific to Indian Ocean. The vertical structure of the thermocline flow at Makassar Strait and the deep overflow through Lifamatora Passage is also quite realistic. However, About half of the simulated ITF water that feeds into the Makassar Strait comes from Sulu Sea and could trace back to Luzon Strait. The simulation also shows quite significant contribution (2~4Sv) of south Pacific water through Hemehera Sea into Brada Sea. And this flow is found very sensitive to the atmospheric forcing.
