The fourteenth annual workshop for users of layered ocean models will be held in Bergen, Norway at the University of Bergen from Monday August 20 through Wednesday August 22, 2007. A 1/2-day HYCOM-specific meeting will be held the afternoon of Wednesday, August 22nd. The meetings will be followed by a two day (August 23-24) workshop on "Numerical Methods in Ocean Climate Modeling" jointly organized by the LOM organizing committee and the CLIVAR WGOMD.
The focus of this year's workshop will be on generalized hybrid vertical coordinates, and more specifically on the vertical mesh motion in layered ocean models. General sessions on recent advances in layered model applications and theory will also be held.
All interested parties (users and non-users) are cordially invited to attend. As in the past, we require that those who wish to make a presentation (oral or poster) have hands-on experience with either layered or hybrid-coordinate ocean models, defined here as models that allow layer thickness to vary in time by casting the continuity equation as a prognostic layer thickness tendency equation. Although such models have traditionally used isopycnic vertical coordinates, presentations on layered or arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) model approaches to other vertical coordinates are welcome.
We will send future mailings regarding this meeting only to those who indicate interest in receiving them. We ask that you let us know by Sunday, May 20th whether or not you are likely to attend, so that we can make ensure enough hotel space. Follow this link to register for the meeting. Information on hotel reservations and the "call for papers" will be sent out soon.
Please pass this invitation on to people whom we may have overlooked when making up the mailing list. This list presently includes (a) attendees of the previous workshops; (b) known past and present users of MICOM/HYCOM and other layered ocean models; (c) colleagues with whom we had contact this year regarding possible use of layered models; (d) funding agency representatives.
We look forward to seeing many of you in Bergen in August.
