"2nd High-Resolution Marine Meteorology Workshop"

15 and 16 April 2003

Holiday Inn Silver Spring
Silver Spring, MD

Chairman: Shawn R. Smith

Hosts: Michael Johnson, Diane Stanitski

Sponsor: NOAA Office of Global Programs

The "2nd High-Resolution Marine Meteorology Workshop" will be held at the Holiday Inn Silver Spring on 15 and 16 April 2004. The workshop will focus on the implementation of recommendations from the "Workshop on High-Resolution Marine Meteorology (HRMM)" held in Tallahassee, FL from 3-5 March 2003 (see coaps.fsu.edu/RVSMDC/marine_workshop/Workshop.html). Two new topics this year will address engaging the user community and how to best interface HRMM activities with other national and international ocean observing programs. The workshop is being held in conjunction with the Office of Climate Observation's Annual Workshop (13, 14 April 2004)

The 2nd HRMM Workshop will advance plans to provide high-accuracy, calibrated, quality-controlled marine observations collected using automated weather systems (AWS) on ships (both merchant and research vessels) and moored platforms. AWS data are an essential component to an ocean observing system. They are an ideal resource to validate satellite sensors and provide benchmarks of air-sea flux fields. When marine AWS data are available on a routine basis, they will support the science objectives of both national and international climate programs.

The workshop will open with a poster session where participants can present current activities related to all aspects of HRMM observations. A limited number of invited presentations will follow to provide a context for new attendees. The bulk of the workshop will involve round-table discussions focusing on several topics:

  1. Reviewing action items from 1st HRMM Workshop.
  2. Coordinating new activities/initiatives resulting from 1st HRMM Workshop recommendations.
  3. Defining/refining the scope and focus of U. S. activities and setting priorities.
  4. Engaging the user community to determine how can they utilize HRMM data and products for research and operations.
  5. Opening a dialog for implementation with UNOLS, other research and VOS ship operators, and moored platform programs.
  6. Discuss how best to interface with the new WCRP Flux Working Group, JCOMM, and other ocean observing programs.

Workshop deliverables will include a written report outlining plans for implementing the recommendations of the 1st HRMM Workshop. Workshop participants will be asked to develop a priority list of activities for U. S. sponsored AWS programs on research vessels, merchant ships, and moored platforms. In addition, the plan should address the needs of both the operational and research users' community. Wherever possible, the attendees will outline areas of responsibility, data/product pathways, a timeline for development, and preliminary cost estimates for developing and evolving the system. Finally, a list of follow-up actions will identify activities that may lead to improvements of the system through synergistic, collaborative, and other low-cost efforts.

All parties interested in attending the workshop are requested to register online by 9 March 2004 (see Hotel Information for more on hotel/logistics). Members of the satellite, modeling, and other user communities are especially encouraged to attend. If you are interested in presenting a poster, please provide a short abstract when you register. Suitable poster topics would include instrument system design, current ship and moored platform deployments, calibration practices, data stewardship (data flow, QC, archival), technician training tools, and current science applications of HRMM data. Questions and comments regarding the workshop should be directed to the chairman (smith@coaps.fsu.edu).
