ABSTRACT

Abyssal circulation in the Indian Ocean from a high resolution simulation forced with climatological winds is compared with hydrographic and current meter observations. The simulation reproduces several known features of bottom water circulation pathways including inter-basin exchanges and in some cases provides additional information on the deep circulation pathways that were previously ambiguous. The simulated meridional overturing circulation is about 5 SV, which although on the lower side is within range of previous estimates. Observations of boundary currents from the WOCE current meter array are also compared to the model solution. The observed and modeled variability in the boundary current transports correlate significantly. Spectral analysis shows that planetary waves are responsible for the most of the variability and are resolved well in the model
