Oceanic CFC uptake: simulations versus observations

ABSTRACT
We followed OCMIP protocol and carried out CFC11 simulations from 1930 to 1999, using two different setups: (1) a coupled model consisting of the GISS atmospheric model and HYCOM, and (2) an ocean-only HYCOM forced with CORE forcings. The simulated global inventory of CFC in the ocean is close to the observed value. The distributions in the tropics and subtropics compare well with the observations. But errors are large at high latitudes in the coupled model, especially in the northern Pacific, where CFC penetrates too deep in the ocean interior. This is not seen in the stand-alone run.
