Validation of HYCOM against ARGO data
Project done by Louis-Nicolas Carril-Murta in 3 months.

Introduction

This work has been done mainly by Louis-Nicolas Carril-Murta, student in the reknown French military academy of St-Cyr. In their last year, these military students need to complete a scientific project of 3 months.

Objectives of the Research

validation of the global configuration of HYCOM with ARGO data

Abstract

This study focuses on comparing output from the global HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) configuration against the data of the ARGO system and assess the model ability on reproducing temperature and velocity fields. The Gulf of Mexico is chosen to be the main basin where comparison takes place. A good reason is that it seems that HYCOM well reproduce the above cited fields except when extreme events such as hurricanes occur. Indeed, the cooling seems to be too important in these regions when simulated with HYCOM (see movie part).

Details are given on the final report of Louis-Nicolas Carril-Murta.
